Assistive Technology Services - Fee Based Services

Assessment Services
Assessment Services involve identifying optimum access methods to computers, augmentative communication devices, and other adaptive devices for daily living for the client. These include:

Gathering of background information
The referring agency is responsible for completion of our background information questionnaire. This document comprises a thorough exploration of the client's physical abilities, educational and vocational history, goals and aspirations.

Assessment for computer input
The information gathered from the questionnaire enables our team to plan an assessment procedure tailored to a client's abilities and goals. This procedure draws from our assessment protocol which incorporates sections such as:

• input devices including keyboards, pointers (e.g., mice, trackballs, joysticks), single and dual switches
  
• input methods including scanning, Morse Code, voice recognition, on-screen keyboards
  
• input enhancements such as prediction, and keyboard and mouse "tweaks" and "tricks"
  
• ergonomics pertaining to client position, input placement, and workstation set-up

Reporting
The report includes a description of equipment and methods considered above and comparative results. It makes specific recommendations about the hardware, software, and ergonomics needed to provide optimum access appropriate to the client's abilities and goals.

Follow-up Services
These may include:

• Equipment acquisition: tender and purchase of the devices, hardware, software, and ergonomic devices; arrange for delivery
  
• Equipment set-up: configuration of the equipment, software, and workstation to meet the specifications described in the report
  
• Training
  
• Direct client training: provision of client instruction in the access method and the operation of the recommended equipment
  
• Tutor training: instruction of a tutor in the skills required to train the client in using the equipment
  
• Caregiver training: training of caregivers in the client's home, school, or workplace to support the recommended equipment. This may involve teaching staff how to start the system, position the client at the system, and perform basic trouble-shooting.
  
• Arranging long-term support: negotiation of contracts with an appropriate third party for long-term computer technology support for the client
